When I saw the teaser of Dunkirk (and now, finally the official trailer) I was once again intrigued by the master manipulator of time and space- Christopher Nolan.
If Memento (2000), The Prestige (2006), Inception (2010) and Interstellar (2014) all have something in common, it will be that they are all fictional stories, mostly written by his younger brother Jonathan Nolan and the man himself.

Now Dunkirk is a little bit different, because it is based on, or inspired by the real battle of Dunkirk in 1940 during World War 2.

Although I’m willing to bet my entire life on the fact that this movie will be another epic piece to add to my collection, I am wondering if we will see any time-manipulation in Dunkirk?

There are really two ways in which Christopher Nolan is able to manipulate time and space in his movies. The first way would be to literally manipulate the time and space within the narrative’s world, like in Inception and Interstellar– let’s call this diegetic manipulation of time and/or space- and the second way would be the non-linear development of the plot, like we have seen in Memento and The Prestige– let’s call this non-diegetic manipulation of time and/or space.

Now right off the bat we can scrap the diegetic approach, because this isn’t a science-fiction or fantasy tale. So for now we will assume he will keep the reality within his world of Dunkirk as it happened. That will leave us with the non-diegetic approach. Now I’m clueless on how and if he will leave us with a film that we will have to watch more than once, but I kind of hope he does- it would really set this combat/war movie apart from the rest.

And on a side-note; what will be the silver lining in this movie? Have you guys noticed the prominent and immense drama? Yes, it is a war movie and ofcourse I’m not expecting this to be by any means a feel-good movie, but I’m talking about those seemingly still images of the bodies on the beach, covered as the sand is blowing over them. Anyway, I would love to hear your thoughts on this and to see what you guys expect from this upcoming masterpiece.

Peace!
